i ran away from home to kick start my exercise

wow its been a long time since i posted on my blog. sad to say i regained the 10 lbs i lost in May or June... i kept it off for quite a few months but when you don't move your body its quite easy to pack the lbs back on. i'm back at my highest weight but thankfully i pull myself together when i hit this...
it seems there a limit to how much personal and family info i want to share in my blog. like many overweight folks, i think there can be a psychological component to the weight problem
wouldnt it be great to be able to go the biggest loser camp for 4 months or so to just concentrate on oneself (always a danger when you go back home that the same triggers will be there....)
anyway, i was struggling to get started w/ my exercise at home, so yesterday i ran away to San Simeon, on the central Calif coast... it is a beautiful weekend here. coupled with some minus tides, i can collect rocks to use in my jewelry
so my plan was to: 1) exercise multiple times a day... the biggest losers workout approx FIVE HOURS A DAY!!!!!!! so far this morning i walked approx 30 mins plus 30 mins of strolling on the beach picking up rocks. then i moved in the indoor pool for an hour, mostly jogging, boy was it tough to keep moving, i kept looking at my watch every 5 minutes, i had to keep telling myself you can do this, move for 45 mins, then move for 15 more mins and you'll have an hour in. last chance workout.. you can do this...

slight kink in my rt shoulder, neck thwarted swimming. i might drive to a store and see if i can get a kick board to do laps with. i specifically booked this motel cuz of the indoor pool. planning is KEY to weight loss, getting in shape...i set as much as possible in place so i could have a successful couple of days.

i might get another water session in today, if the pool is empty. seems theres a bit of swimsuit malfunction so i need to be solamente in the pool...

2) eat healthy foods that i brought from home and salad fixins i bought in Morro Bay. i've struggled with the fat chick today, seems she hitched along for the ride. she kept screaming "go use the breakfast coupon, order something healthy if you are strong enough.... well that wasn't gonna happen, my willpower has been in the gutter lately. so i had a powerbar and a fuyu persimmon before my walk, then some baby carrots w/ low fat ranch for a snack,

now it's lunch time. i fixed a salad w/ albacore and 2tb low fat ranch dressing. lots of organic mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, red bell pepper and some other veggies.
heres what it looks like:

i'll have to upload this later the connection is too slow right now

on tap for this afternoon/evening is some jewelry making. hopefully i will get some good pictures and upload product to my online shop

i also will be walking, rock collecting... i do plan on this!!! i don't know if i will work out 5 hrs but definetly i'm ahead of the game than if i'd stayed home
thankfully my youngest son is home to take care of the animals... thanks, sweetie!!!!

i swear i wake up and another MONTH has flown by

wow, it is now frigging September 2010. how does that HAPPEN?!!!!
i didn't do one workout the whole month of August and now the 1st week of september has blown past me at warp speed... maybe we invented time travel and didn't know it?!
i did spend alot of hrs the past month and this labor day weekend planting veggies... it's the start of fall planting season which takes extra time to get the fall and some winter veggies started.

so although i didn't get aerobic exercise, i was walking around garden alot.

my plan is to grow ORGANIC FOOD for 6 people this fall and winter: my household, plus Mom, plus DS/fiancee. some seeds have already sprouted that i planted on Fri due to our warm weather. i'm switching over to planting beds made w/ flakes of alfalfa and hay bales. so i am getting some exercise hauling my trash cans of compost to front yard. turns out if you ignore green waste in trash cans that have holes in bottom the worms eventually work their way through... so possibly the 'compost' is mainly worm castings. sure to grow prime veggies. i started a KALE wheelbarrow filled w/ the same material.

here's what i'm eating from my garden: pole green beans grown in pots, american eggplant, assorted HOT peppers, green bell peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, swiss chard, several types of kale, collard greens, assorted lettuces, arugula, new zealand spinach, yellow crook neck and pattypan squash, beet greens off of years old beets, mint, basil. a few strawberries, ditto some slowly ripening figs. turns out the rootstock sucker from my bonzana dwarf peach produces golfball sized WHITE peaches w/ a rose scent..

for breakfast this morning i made WRAPS using cooked pinto beans i pureed in mini food processor, red onion, some processed cheese(okay not the healthiest choice but all i had on hand) taco sauce, just picked warm early girl tomatoes, either wrapped up in just picked collard or swiss chard leaves. i love the CRUNCH of the collard but my leaves are small... the swiss chard was very tender and delicious... this swiss chard plant is several years old, the base of plant is like a tree branch 5 -6 inches in diameter. i just keep whacking it back so it produces tender new leaves.

sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo now that i'm definitely on a roll eating healthy FRESH veggies it is time to get on the treadmill, or the recumbent bike or walk the neighborhood.....

btw, DH lost 18 lbs just walking 3.2 miles 4-5 times a wk, course we do have HILLS in our neighborhood... he was able to qualify for new life insurance policy at the lowest PREFERRED rate... huge $$$S savings to us yearly plus he is healthier i'm sure..

This month we are celebrating 36 years of marriage, once again time FLIES by...

since i'm home alone, i'm heading to the garage will watch some US Open tennis while i bike. i will hold myself accountable and check back in here AFTERWARDS...

am i afraid to try to run a marathon?

after i started this blog, i admit some doubts have started to creep in that i can run a 26.2!!!! mile marathon...
definetly i will have to work on this mental issue as it's a deal breaker...
it's like talking to women who've had kids and hearing their labor horror stories, i must concentrate on the positive marathon tales,
Yes it will be hard, but my goal is just to finish...i've started looking at marathon race result for my then 60 yr old bracket... 5.5 to 6 hrs...so must find a race whose course stays open at least 6 hrs...
i will be reaching out to some folks for help doing this
but FIRST i need to concentrate from now til June 2012 on losing 90-ish pounds, that then gives me a year to build up a running base before i start a 16wk marathon training plan

so NOW i must concentrate on the present picture, take this in small bites.... what do i need to do to lose weight in August 2011?

so i'm going to just concentrate on losing 10 lbs, plan is to workout 4 times this week...
my life has been joyously enriched by the addition of an almost 2 yr old male f2 savannah cat 11 says ago and all i want to do is sit in the guest room w/ him. we had a major breakthrough today: i picked him up. since the 1st pickup i've done it multiple times and he is purring. all well and good but that didn't get to the garage to ride the recumbent bike...
here's a blog entry and pic of our darling http://www.goldenwatercreations.blogspot.com/

i must crack the whip on myself and get to exercising or another month will drift by like July did....

oops i dropped off the face of the earth

man,how rude to start a blog and then just drop off the face of the earth...
it seems there is a process to getting ready to work out and get healthy...
i spent many weeks in June and July planting and then tending my veggie garden so i will have healthy organic food to eat rest of this year.
i lost a total of 10 lbs in June and then lost 1.5 lbs 1st wk in July then i didn't get any exercise... i used the best time in the morning weather to be outside in the garden
so sadly i regained the 1.5 July loss but drum roll, i did keep off the 10 lbs lost in June (no i'm not looking for them, they can stay lost ;-D )

while i was gardening, i composed many blog entries in my mind, but they have vanished from memory now LOL

FAT Chick on my Shoulder says "EAT This NOW"

does this happen to you- you are all set to be totally on plan food wise for the day and THEN the FAT Chick who rides around on your shoulder starts WHISPERING in your ear "Man, a cinnamon roll sure would taste good about now" I, of course, ignore my FAT Chick's comments when she first starts talking to me and I listen to the HEALTHY Chick (notice i didn't write the THIN chick, this is about being HEALTHY!) who says is a clear voice, NO, you don't need/want/desire cinnamon roll, your (insert on plan food item) is delicious and is everything you want and need right now....so then the FAT chick speaks up in a little bit louder voice in my ear " EAT THIS CRAP NOW" so i'm walking around with all this noise in my head eat this, no eat this.....it's ridiculous...
at times I'm able to completely ignore FAT chick, but i admit sometimes her's is the voice i choose, not the winning voice because i'm losing at my 60 yr old gal can run a marathon Plan if i let Fat chick win.

Today was a good example of why FAT chick has a chance to start talking to me. i ate a meal plan bar at 7:30 and went off to Lowes and Home Depot for gardening supplies (got some more veggie seeds, hooray!) and then a stop at Sprouts to stock up on salad fixings. by the time i got to sprouts it was 10 a.m. and i was hungry. so her influence wasn't too bad: i got a wheat french bread loaf and tore off a chunk to eat on the way home.
as i did that a light bulb went off in my head: i MUST get back to my old FAT chick battle plan, carry water, some sort of snack and fruit with me when i go to run errands. that way if they take longer i have HEALTHY Chick foods in my purse.

Ready Set Go

well, it's my first official week on my long term plan to run a marathon when i'm 60. I'm composing this on my laptop perched on a makeshift shelf on my schwinn recumbent bike in the garage.
i felt such a sense of relief on Monday when i knuckled down to losing weight that i was prepared in alot of ways as i had my past history of 60 pound loss to recall what worked then.

in a "perfect world", i would have gotten my house all de-hoarded, stocked up with on plan foods, ( in a "perfect world" i wouldn't have to lose 80-90 lbs thought would I?!!!!!!)okay for ease of typing from now on let's say I want to lose 100 lbs. i'm not sure what my final goal weight will be, i think my body will tell me when i get there.

i figured it was better to start MOVING (vs spending way too much time watching tv or surfing the internet which unlike the ocean surfing uses up ZIP calories)

thankfully I had on hand some great workout clothes and shoes.
WARNING: GET A DOCTOR'S CHECKUP IF YOU ARE GOING TO START AN EXERCISE PLAN, i think that recommendation is for 40+ yrs old, but if you have any health conditions, check with your doctor.
this is my story and i hope you might join in safely if you'd like to....

so here is what i had to help me get READY:

it's a real challenge to find workout clothes if you have 100+ lbs to lose. I hope to locate some internet sites that carry these items.

ASICS workout shoes, for heavy folks, stablizing shoes are recommended. http://www.zappos.com/ is a great online shoe site but if you are buying your first workout shoes, i suggest a brick and mortar sporting goods or running store. often times running shoes run smaller than your regular shoes

C9 by champion, workout wear that keeps you dri, forget cotten work out clothes, they are so irritating. i seriously don't know how the Biggest Loser participants tolerate cotton! http://www.target.com/  sizes up to women's xxl.  pick up some dri socks as well....

Underarmour dri sports bar, sense a theme here?!!!! i love underarmour workout clothes, unfortunately i don't think they manufactor clothes in women's sizes.

Halo sweat band, this has a strip that keeps the sweat out of your eyes.. http://www.haloheadband.com/

when i run outside i like pants or shorts w/ pockets for gels http://www.raceready.com/ they have a wonderful bottle gripper so you can slip your hand inside around your water bottle.

there are also belts to carry water bottles.

if i'm running or walking i like to wear an Id tag w/ info in case an accident would befall me. http://www.roadid.com/

if you are working up a sweat over time your workout clothes just get funky, regular laundry detergent can't cut it. i love WIN, sports laundry detergent
http://www.windetergent.com/

BIG THANKS  to my What I Did Right Today gal friends: Gayle, Kathy, Jenn, Denise, Jenga, Mickie for all the support and clueing me in to these great products back in 2007!

so with these items I was ready to get started on my workouts. My plan this week is to MOVE, not watch TV as much. I started my mornings with planting veggies in my garden. Later i will get lots of organic food to fuel my healthy life style.

speaking of food, i needed to get READY with that as well. for the time being i'm using HMR shakes and entrees to which i add veggies and fruit. I used them before successfully.
http://www.hackleyhealthmanagement.com/

i add spinach and other greens to the shakes, some mint leaves, cinnamon and ginger are great also.
where would i be with out my Champ blender?!!!

my son and husband also like the entrees, they need no refrigeration and cook in 1 minute, or eat them cold. great for traveling by car, or checked baggage.
i need to stock up on frozen veggies, some that go well are green beans, mixed veggies.

my grocery run will include cherry tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash, cucumbers, mixed lettuce greens, bell pepper, broccoli, cauliflower. so many great summer veggies and fruits.

thankfully i have plums, peaches, tangerines, oranges, blackberries ready or getting ready in my yard.

so that covers my READY

what is SET? i guess climbing on the recumbent bike and starting to pedal?!!!

or GO.

i'm slowly pedaling for an hour as i do this blog, but i know i need to do some workouts with out using the laptop. this would be great to use in the evening, vs laying on the bed typing or watching tv...

the scale is already moving downward this week. my offical weigh in day is Monday but i'm pleased with what i'm seeing mid-week.

i've lost 7.5 lbs since June 1st. (wow, how many calories was i normally consuming before to maintain my weight?)

if you have any workout gear you've found helpful drop me a comment.....

Hard to believe I will be 60 in 2013

man, where do the years go?!!!! in 2007, i trained myself to run half marathons after losing 60 lbs. i was still overweight but i was able to run 2 half marathons: Traverse City, MI and Albuquerque, New Mexico. (hey picking races in distant states is a great excuse for travel....) then bam i let life interfere and i regained  all the pounds and stopped running or lifting weights.
this weekend i gave a great deal of thought to the fact i will be 60 in 2013. this is not the shape i want to be in. i miss being strong and able to do lots of lifting and gardening tasks.
i don't feel 'old' at 57, so i'm starting back w/ a workout plan to lose 80-90 lbs so i will be lighter than when i ran in 2007...
the rest of 2011, i will concentrate on dropping weight, due to some almost broken left heel issues, i daren't run at this weight but there are so many other things i can do such as: walking, riding my recumbent bike, weight training.
i rented a street strider that was just returned from the Biggest Loser Ranch but i got ill on my San Diego trip so i wasn't able to practice on it.  i think it looks like a wonderful machine to exercise on, check it out.
http://www.streetstrider.com/ Kevin from LA street strider was so helpful, he dropped a machine off at my house, saving me driving to Venice. although i did think a visit there would give me a great opportunity to walk the venice canals... http://www.travelinlocal.com/a-guide-to-walking-the-venice-canals-in-los-angeles/
i'm a bit of a klutz and have never skied or used an elliptical machine, so i think i have a higher than normal learning curve on it. sure many folks pick this up pretty quickly
having been a couch potato and spending too much time doing my favorite hobbies of genealogy and casual jewelry making, it might have been more realistic to do several weeks of exercise before renting the Street Strider, my goal is to be injury free so i must think smart and not attempt TOO MUCH at one time

in 2012 i will get a bone density test and hopefully be able to start building up a running base. i miss running around the beautiful Palos Verdes area. it's a good idea to have a one year's running base of 25-30 miles a wk before starting to train for a half marathon or full marathon. i was able to do the other 2 races with out a full year's base but hey i'm older now..
anyone else shocked when they look in the mirror and see age on their face?!!! i mean come on, inside i still feel like i did in my twenties!!

i hope to inspire others to reach for some lofty goals in the next several years. please follow me along on my QUEST and share your goals with me.
